[TRANS] 111004 JYJ Speaks Out #3 – A Conversation Of Their Own

Conversation 1. Kim Jaejoong’s cooking skills that were shown in the last episode of ‘Protect the Boss’

Jaejoong: I really did all the cooking for that episode.
Junsu: He especially cooked for us a lot in Japan. Midnight snacks and such.
Jaejoong: Junsu didn’t have many opportunities to try my cooking. Because he usually doesn’t eat midnight snacks.
Junsu: Yeah, I didn’t have much of it.
Jaejoong: Only Yoochun, I and Changmin ate lots of midnight snacks.
Junsu: He’s good at making kimchi fried rice and kimchi jjigae. There’s the japtang jjigae that he makes in which he throws in whatever we have left, and he makes it really taste good.
Yoochun: When we used to live in a dorm, I realized that he was really good at cooking when he would make great food, no matter what ingredients he was using. And he’s really good at seasoning his food. I think that’s why his cooking tastes great, no matter what he makes.
Junsu: He can make the food taste great without any artificial flavors. He takes pride in that fact. He never uses any artificial flavoring! (laughter)
Jaejoong: If I was born in the past, I would have been born as Jang-geum.

Conversation 2. Why are Kim Jaejoong and Park Yoochun members of the celebrity soccer team FC MEN, of which Kim Junsu is the captain of, only in name?

Junsu: It’s false (that the two members are promotional tools). I knew that the members would join in just because it was something I was doing, and I knew that the members like to play sports. We used to play soccer together a lot in the past.
Yoochun: The reason we joined in was because we knew everyone there and it was a hobby for us, but Junsu has practically become a professional player. (laughter)
Junsu: Honestly, even I didn’t think it would get this big.. Things happened and I ended up here. I had no intentions for it to end up this serious. (laughter)
Jaejoong: But the soccer team that Junsu’s a part of have done a lot of good things. When they were trying to attract more players, they would say ‘Celebrities such as Kim Junsu, Park Yoochun, Kim Jaejoong and Kim Hyun Joong are members’, but later, when they appeared on the news for doing good deeds, our (Yoochun and Jaejoong) names were left out!
Junsu: I’m not the one who wrote those articles. Please know that. I always wrote our members’ names first. And it’s not that I’m not letting them play. They never show up (to the soccer matches)!
Jaejoong: The media follows them whenever they have a match. I don’t feel comfortable falling over and looking lacking when there are cameras taking pictures of us.. (laughter)
Junsu: No, no, that’s only a small portion though. We play in so many more practice games by ourselves than in proper matches.
Jaejoong: I’ll go for one of those then. I wouldn’t object if it was a leisurely game in the neighborhood, but it’s a bit too much for me if there are reporters and fans who take pictures while we play. (laughter)
Junsu: To be honest, I was nervous at first too. You’re right. It is a bit nerve-wracking.

Conversation 3. What is the real job of Kim Junsu, who recently showed off his StarCraft skills on @Play on MBC’s gaming channel?

Junsu: (laughter)
Jaejoong: What is your real job indeed?
Junsu: I’m friends with Seo Kyung Jong and he’s been asking me to appear for a while. I wasn’t able to due to my work, and I just happened to have time off on that day so I was suddenly added into the show mere hours before it began.. It didn’t matter because it was just playing a game that I like.
Yoochun: Seriously.. I’m his fellow member but even I thought it was awesome.
Jaejoong: We were having such a hard time with appearing on broadcasted shows and he goes and appears on a gaming show. Wow~
Yoochun: It was amazing! And he’s good at it too.
Junsu: At least the gaming channel didn’t block me. (laughter)

Conversation 4. Kim Junsu stands in the center of ‘Xiahmori’ (The members intentionally teasing Xiah Junsu)

Junsu: Well.. I’m enjoying it in a composed manner. (laughter) These days, we rotate the person getting teased. Sometimes we do ‘Yoochun mori’ and sometimes we do ‘Jaejoong mori’.
Jaejoong: It’s because Junsu’s so nice. When we do ‘Yoochun mori’, Yoochun sulks and when it’s my turn, even I sulk and get mad. But Junsu never gets mad. And it’s fun. (laughter)
Yoochun: He just accepts it all.
Jaejoong: He’s so nice.
Junsu: Ah.. So does this mean I can never get mad from now on? (laughter)

Conversation 5. What does a recording studio mean to JYJ?

Yoochun: I moved recently. I’ve invested about 100 million Won to create a workroom inside, but the desk that fits the size of the instruments comes in late October so I have nowhere to put my instruments. So right now, it’s almost impossible for me to work on my compositions. The instruments are strewn about everywhere and I haven’t been able to set them up..
Junsu: Me too, me too. So I’ve been working on compositions on and off. I haven’t been able to write any songs.
Jaejoong: Brings the tracks and come to my house.
Yoochun: I’ve made a lot of tracks but I haven’t been able to make any guides.
Jaejoong: You can do it at our recording studio. The JYJ recording studio in Gangnam!
Junsu: By the way, there’s a reason why there aren’t that many of Yoochun’s compositions in our album. He was filming for ‘SungKyunKwan Scandal’ when we were preparing for the album so he wasn’t able to write any songs.
Jaejoong: I’ve heard some of the songs that Yoochun’s written.. (shakes his head) They’re sensational. Sensational.
Junsu: There’s one song that I really like out of all of Yoochun’s songs. We’ve been keeping it as our weapon. We were thinking of putting it in this album, but we decided to present it in our next album. He’s really good (at writing songs).

[TRANS] 111004 JYJ Speaks Out #2 – Talking About Kim Jaejoong, Park Yoochun And Kim Junsu

Kim Jaejoong

Heodang (Lacking): Though Cha Mu Won of ‘Protect the Boss’ is a chaebol, there is definitely something he can’t do. His weakness is that he’s not good at fighting because all he does is lock himself up in his office and study. I expressed that in a very ‘heodang (lacking)’ way. I’m like that too. Because I’m not that active, I’m not that good at ball games. In the drama, I was made to look like I was even really good at sports, but in real life, I have a very ‘heodang’ nature. (Yoochun) I think it would be best.. if Jaejoong didn’t play ball games like soccer or basketball in front of others. (laughter)

Ji Sung: Even I could see myself getting better with every new episode. It would have been impossible if it weren’t for Ji Sung. He must have been busy enough studying his own character, but he took care of me and helped me run my lines. I think the scenes in which we were acting together came alive because I normally feel comfortable around Ji Sung.

Individual Activities: As you all know, we started pursuing individual activities to promote JYJ as we were unable to appear on music programs. Our individual activities became a great opportunity for us to promote JYJ. It started like that but we feel the charm of being an actor or a musical actor more and more as time goes on. (Yoochun) But personally, I don’t feel confident about pursuing a career in musicals. I think I’d be compared too much to Junsu. (laughter)

Park Yoochun

Cha Mu Won (Kim Jaejoong) of ‘Protect the Boss’: He took on his character very well. I found myself naturally falling into the drama as I watched it. I also feel envious of Jaejoong because he took on a character that could present something different from his original image and did so very well. It’s so much that if I ever get the chance, I’d like to play a character similar to the one that Jaejoong portrayed. I’m not joking when I saw that I could see this unknown aura around Jaejoong. So I thought, ‘So this is the power of Jaejoong. (Jaejoong) Thank you. My senior~

Song Yoo Hyun: While playing Song Yoo Hyun in MBC’s ‘Miss Ripley’, there were many moments when I thought, ‘If this were me, I would have exploded.’ But I acted with the understanding that, ‘It could happen because it’s Song Yoo Hyun.’ Though I can’t say that there weren’t moments when I felt frustrated, I laid down the judgment that it was because I was too unskilled in my portrayal of Song Yoo Hyun. If I felt frustrated, wouldn’t Song Yoo Hyun feel a little frustrated too? It was only after I was done filming the drama that I began to think ‘Couldn’t I have been able to express this in another way?’ instead of thinking that the script wasn’t helping with the frustration I had.

The villain’s part: I want to try playing the villain. I think the biggest reason is because I don’t look like a bad guy. Though I want to try taking on a role that pulls me away from the image I have now, I think it would only be right for me to take on such a role after I’ve become more experienced. For now, I want to try everything, regardless of the character.

Kim Junsu

Drama: It’s not that I’m not interested, it’s just that I had already taken part in two musicals this year and wanted to take a break instead of pursuing solo activities. And because each of the other members had his own schedules drawn for his respective drama, I believed it was only right for me to take that time to support them. I’d like to try acting in a drama someday. But it looked so tiring for Jaejoong and Yoochun to stay up all night filming, so I’m in a dilemma.

Together: We try to make every stage one that everyone can enjoy together. We don’t just show what we want to show and end the concert when we’re done, we try to work together with the crowd. We casually ask how they’re doing, and we immediately answer any questions they give us. Because there are a lot of restrictions on our activities that include broadcasted ones, we try to create a more free atmosphere when we meet with our fans and we work hard to satisfy them with our concerts. Though we like dramas and musicals, we started out as singers and we want to be singers forever.

[TRANS] 111004 JYJ Speaks Out #1 – JYJ, Start Over

The first Korean album that JYJ have released is in fact, a letter from them. JYJ’s first Korean album contains all the honest stories that they have wanted to talk about but have been unable to do so till now. Kim Jaejoong, Park Yoochun and Kim Junsu wrote down the emotions they felt as they traversed the dark tunnel which seemed to have no end and created lyrics from these words. The times of suffering have made them the hardworking people they are now, and have given birth to an album filled with their compositions. The members of JYJ, who we met at the press conference to commemorate the release of their first Korean special album ‘In Heaven’, opened and looked closely at the that they had created. Kim Junsu said it was ‘a gem-like album’, while Kim Jaejoong described it as ‘a code-like album’. The illustrious results are in their hands but they still do not know where the end of the tunnel is. But, what’s important is that it’s slowly but surely getting better. We reveal the story of JYJ, arranged in keywords to express the stories they wished to tell.

‘In Heaven’: (Jaejoong) It’s an album that contains the memories and the inside story of the past two years. While I’m proud of the fact that so many of our compositions are included in the album, I know it’s an album that elicits a lot of memories. We were unable to appear on broadcasted programs due to unavoidable circumstances, and the only way we could approach our fans and the masses was through concerts. The compositions within the album are songs that were more for our concerts than for creating an album, and that fills me with emotions.

A code-like message: (Jaejoong) There’s a message in most of the songs. There are some lyrics that voice our honest stories in a 100% straight manner, while there are some that beat around the bush as we can’t say what we really want to say. But no matter how much we beat around the bush, I’m sure if you’ve been wish us till now, you’ll think our inside story as you listen to the songs. On the other hand, the regular person will just hear the lyrics for what they are. That’s why this album is a code-like album.

Producer JYJ: (Jaejoong) We work well together. I know the strengths and weaknesses of these friends really well because we’ve spent so much time together. I don’t necessarily need to ask for what purpose the parts in a member’s composition were distributed the way they were to know their intent. (Junsu) When I write a song, I always ask the members for their opinion on it. In that process, we’re able to pick up on things that I wouldn’t have been able to think of by myself. Because we trust each other as musicians, we accommodate to each other’s opinions and move in a direction that will show JYJ’s color.

Fallen Leaves: (Junsu) It’s a song I wrote right after the musical ‘Mozart!’ ended. I wrote the lyrics for the song around two or three o’clock in the morning while we were in Taiwan, and I expressed through music the emotions I had wanted to talk about but hadn’t been able to express in words. The ‘Start over’ in the refrain at the very end was initially intended to be sung just once. But I wanted to express it in the voices of our members, so Yoochun sang it once, Jaejoong sang it once and I sang it once. We sang it a total of three times. The ‘Start over’ in the lyrics of ‘Fallen Leaves’ was the message I most wanted to voice to the public.

JYJ’s Color: (Junsu) I don’t want to choose one specific color for us. We aren’t biased towards a specific genre, and we try to express the exact emotions that we feel at the moment. We want to take on a variety of genres. I don’t know what other genres we’ll take on in the future, and I think our future color will be one in which a variety of musical genres are naturally integrated with JYJ.

KBS’s review is unqualified: (Jaejoong) Because tracks of an album that aren’t the title song often fail to pass the review, I didn’t feel offended when I first received the news. But the problem is ‘why the song failed to pass the review’. They laid down the verdict that the song was unsuitable for airing because of a word that they made an assumption about and made up without asking the creator for the actual meaning. To mark something off in the way they want and to give a notice of this is disrespecting the creator.

P.S.M: (Jaejoong) It means Performer Success Museum. Everyone wants to find success in their lives. But it is only possible to succeed by receiving help or education from institutions or borrowing the strength of others. For example, if we assume that schools or private educational institutes are museums that make you successful, then the people within these institutes lie to the people who are looking for hope. They say, ‘We don’t care about the materialistic things, we just want to help you’. That’s what it means.

Concert: (Jaejoong) When we hold our concerts, we deliberately try to put in as much time to talk as possible. It’s to the extent that one could ask ‘Is this a concert or a fanmeet?’ We don’t have many outlets in which we can communicate with our fans. By choosing to focus our activities on concerts, we keep increasing the number of songs we have and present these to our fans, and we try to have as many conversations as possible with them. It’s like we vent out our emotions in front of our fans. Though we decided on a theme for every concert, we end up ignoring that theme because we talk so much and we start joking around. (laughter)

Solo Concert in Europe: (Yoochun) Though we’re holding a tour in Europe, we won’t change our color and style just because the venue of our concert has changed. We try to integrate JYJ’s color in the culture of these countries. (Junsu) Even when we had our North American tour in Canada and the LA, San Francisco and New Jersey regions, we felt this great sense of pressure like we do now for our Europe tour. But once we actually got to the concert venue, we saw that there were more fans who had waited for us than we had expected. Though we’re worried, we try to think of it in a positive way. We think of the fact that we’ve gotten this far as a miracle, and we hope that another miracle will ensue.

Director Kim Jaejoong: (Jaejoong) I like to meddle in things a lot. If something’s even a little out-of-place, I try to set it straight so I keep butting in. That’s how I started directing. Even with our music, I went from saying ‘I don’t like the lyrics’ to ‘Let me write them’. And when I wrote lyrics that were suitable, that’s how I began writing my own lyrics, and I have a lot of small greeds that I wish to fulfill.

Yunho, Changmin: (Jaejoong) They often appear in our dreams. Once, all three of us dreamt of them on the same night. I think a considerably large amount of time has passed. Though the misunderstandings that came about because of the time and distance we’ve spent apart may take more time to unravel, shall I say that for us, a lot of it has already disappeared? We want to meet with them and talk, just once.
