When one examines the nicknames that indicate the stars, one can read the degree of attention of the fans. In particular, in the case of popular idols, nicknames are sometimes more often used than the actual names. The motives behind the creation of these pet names are varied. There are some nicknames that have been created by taking a hint from the (actual) name and there are also pet names that highlight the personality and the talent. JYJ’s Kim Junsu (25) is called by the nickname “dolphin” among the fans. It is likening Kim Junsu’s singing ability to that of a dolphin that produce a sound wave high-pitched enough that the human ear cannot hear. It is a nickname based on his (wide) range of vocals that handles even high notes effortlessly. Recently Kim Junsu was picked in a research to have had the highest singing ability among idol members and have received praise as being “indeed, dolphin Kim Junsu.”

JYJ’s Park Yoochun (25) incurred the complaint of fans by retaining long hair that seemed somewhat shaggy last year. His wavy and long hairstyle produced the response that “it reminds one of seaweed” and gave birth to the nickname of Seaweed Monster. When he later came back to neat and short hair, it became the news of the town to the degree that “Park Yoochun Haircut” became listed among the popular search words on a well-known portal site.
