A ‘Complex of Image-based Culture Tourism’ is being constructed in Mungyeong, Gyeongsangbuk-do in a collaboration that includes SM Entertainment.

The Mungyeong municipality revealed on the 26th that it has chosen ‘M City PFV’, a consortium created by those such as Fides Developers and SM Entertainment, as the entrepreneurial group to take on the ‘Mungyeong Complex of Image-based Culture Tourism’.

The complex will be developed collectively by a professional development firm, a professional entertainment contents firm, and a local government that has the resources for cultural tourism. According to Fides Developers, the complex will not follow the stereotypical facilities-heavy structure of normal theme parks and will instead use cultural contents and celebrities as its attraction factor.

The construction is set to be done in stages. Saejae World, the first stage of the plans, will be 35,894m²and will be comprised of facilities such as filming locations (indoor and outdoor studios etc), recreational facilities (spa, water park etc), image-based content facilities (experiential facilities, fansign event rooms etc). The total cost of the project is 43 billion Won and it is set to be completed in 2012.

The Saejae World industry will create a family-based theme park full of cultural content that will break free of the preexisting form of theme parks and will differentiate itself with its supply of cultural content such as movies and dramas.

For this project, SM Entertainment will be providing its celebrities and cultural contents. A variety of ‘star zones’ will be set up for celebrities such as Girls’ Generation, TVXQ and BoA with fansign events and fanmeetings to be held there. Star marketing will be used for the theme park with the lego-style condos featuring rooms such as the ‘BoA Room’, and ‘TVXQ Room’ in which the stars themselves will have stayed in. Movie Director Kang Jae Gyu will also be participating in the project and is planning to use the site for future filming locations.

The complex will make Mungyeong the core of culture tourism in Korea and will encompass an area of 888,186m² comprising of three worlds, Saejae World, Gaeun World and Hanae World. Saejae World will be the first to be completed.

Saejae World, the first stage of the complex, will begin construction in the first half of this year and is expected to be completed by the first half of 2012. Shin Hyung Gook, the mayor of Mungyeong, stated, “As Mungyeong is plentiful in cultural and historical artifacts as well as tourism resources, such as the Mungyeong Saejae, we had over 3.7 million visitors in the past year alone,” and “We will open a new era for theme parks by combining the cultural resources of Mungyeong with the technology and contents of the nation.”
