[TRANS] 110717 Have JYJ Become Symbols Of Injustice?

Before we start discussing the topic of JYJ, there are some pre-requisites that need to be explained. This is because this topic may start with JYJ, but the main point that I am trying to make is not only related to JYJ.

Pre-requisite 1: JYJ are Idols

JYJ consists of TVXQ’s “Xiah Junsu, Micky Yoochun, Hero Jaejoong,” the trio who broke away and re-formed this new unit. TVXQ stands at the pinnacle of the idol world. This is a group that is empowered by being members of TVXQ and as idols, they hold a representative position, and their appearance bears significant meaning.

Naturally, while having a fiercely loyal fanbase, there is also the existence of anti-fans. Therefore, everything is split based on whether or not one is a fan, not based on one’s opinion on an issue. It is not that I want to talk about JYJ, it is that I want to talk about the issue surrounding them, meaning that there is a need to erase the stereotypes that surround the ‘idol’.

Pre-requisite 2: JYJ are Wealthy

JYJ have amassed a large fortune. This is something that we know based on newspaper reports about their assets.

The main focus of their problems is their claims against SM Entertainment for an unfair contract, and many people feel that despite JYJ’s large fortune, they still decided to take their company to court, and this is no different from being a “betrayer.” Saying that they don’t have any gratitude for those who raised them, some criticize them, saying ‘How rich you slaves are.’

Although there may be such feelings, if you think about it, it’s a really simple matter. All the Courts are making a verdict on is whether the contract is unfair or not, which means that how much they have earned till now should not be the main point that is taken into consideration. There is no difference between stealing 50,000 won from someone with 100,000 won or stealing 50,000 won from someone 100 million won. If we criticize a person who earns 100 million Won a year for trying to get his stolen 50,000 Won back, or if society accepts that it is not a crime to steal that much money from someone who earns that much, then we should go knocking on CEO Lee Geon Hee’s door (T/N: Lee Geon Hee is the CEO of one of Korea’s major conglomerates, Samsung). You might be able to get away with stealing 100 million Won from him without it being called a crime. If you wanted to strike gold, you could always try stealing from Bill Gates too.

Though they were the ones who signed the contract, once one is placed in an ‘A’ and ‘B’ relationship in any kind of contract, it may be that ‘B’ can’t help but follow the opinion of ‘A’ and do what ‘A’ says. That is for the Courts to decide.

Therefore, with these pre-requisites, there is no basis in labelling them as wealthy, or as betrayers. The most important point is, “How will the court rule?” Thus, we should not jump into conclusions and judge them before a verdict is called.

Judging from the current situation, JYJ is in a very unfair position. The strangest thing about JYJ’s promotions is that while they are unhampered in their appearance in news reports and dramas, they are unable to participate in entertainment programs.

JYJ has been regularly faced with cancellation of their programs. JYJ recorded a program for QTV that showed their daily lives, and it was to be aired on QTV but it was never broadcasted. Park Yoochun was supposed to appear on KBS’s “Win Win” but that was eventually called off. This time, despite already receiving the cue sheets for their participation in the Jeju promotion event, their appearance was cancelled in the end.

Furthermore, in normal circumstances, when a new drama is about to be aired, the main casts are asked to appear on various variety shows as a form of promotions. However, in the situation of MBC’s “Miss Ripley,” there was no coverage of the press interview, and the main casts did not appear on programs such as “Come to Play.”

To appear in dramas and the news but not on entertainment programs is baffling. Of course, with regards to this, although it has been said by fans that it is the actions of a certain company that are restricting the broadcasts, there has been no clear indication of this and therefore there is a possibility that the said company is not involved.

On the other hand, I believe that the problem lies within the broadcasters because it looks as if they are toying with JYJ as they cast them only in dramas and talk about them only in news reports. In the case of dramas, appearances from these three members ensures a higher selling price for the drama overseas. That is why it seems as though these broadcasting companies are allowing JYJ to appear in their dramas, but not in anything else. It isn’t great to know that they are taking only the things they want and tossing aside everything else. But because JYJ appear in dramas aired by these broadcasters, it is up to the companies on whether or not JYJ get to appear in any of the other programs.

But the situation with the Jeju promotional performance is different. They were appointed as ambassadors for Jeju, and achieved a significant effect in terms of promotions, yet they were rejected from the performance, and this sudden cancellation, despite having their schedules confirmed, is difficult to comprehend. Overseas fans had made plans to come to Korea to watch the performance, which makes it a bigger problem. Furthermore, this issue involves a public broadcaster KBS, making it more unfortunate.

To have been pre-appointed as ambassadors for Jeju island, then having their performance cancelled for no apparent reason is obviously unfair. After gaining the desired publicity effect and then rejecting JYJ creates an image of a bad employer. The large number of fans who have been hurt must also be mentioned. This is not something a public broadcaster should do.

The rumours of an invisible external pressure is something we are unwilling to believe in. There will always be special circumstances, and it is because of these reasons that broadcasts have to be cancelled. Before the court reaches a decision, their artist activities cannot be obstructed. Korea is a country governed by laws. For Korea to have a force that overrides the laws is unimaginable, and there is no way to be sure that this force exists. But if no external forces are at work, I don’t think that someone could just prevent a broadcast from happening. Therefore, I hope that KBS can give a reasonable explanation for the sudden cancellation of JYJ’s broadcast. I hope that we can get a believable reason for this cancellation.

I hope that KBS can bring across the message that “The Republic of Korea is a lawful society, where unfairness cannot exist” to everyone. If KBS’s explanation is not convincing, then it would be regrettable, a pity. This will prove that in the Republic of Korea exists some sort of power that exists outside of the law, or perhaps KBS needs to cater to the fancies of some organizations before producing programs. If this is the case, then obviously, with these powers in place, JYJ is burdened as the sacrificial lambs of unfairness, and will become the symbols of injustice.
