Q: How does it feel to be a solo singer, XIAH junsu?
A: I’m nervous, and yet, I'm anticipating it. (laugh) However, no matter what, I have to do my best! This emotion is the strongest. Also, releasing a new single and starting [again] with singing which I enjoy the most, is what makes me the happiest.
Q: So far, you’ve always given a gentle, cool and a little mysterious impression....
A: Mysterious?! What's that all about? I'm a little embarrassed. (laugh)
Q: “Intoxication" is glamorous and sexy, but "Kanashimi no Yukue" is a silent and sorrowful song, with the essence of manliness. So is Junsu's image suddenly changed again?
A: "Intoxication" was composed by me. As a solo artiste, I would still prefer to sing in genres like African-American R&B which I have wanted to do for a long time now. The lyrics were written under the influence of the lyricist's world’s view. (embarrassed) It is a bit sexy. (laughs)
Q: I'm overwhelmed by the mature atmosphere! All the female fans must have been allured.
A: It's a different feeling from the previous Junsu, right? (laugh) The dance of this song also suited the atmosphere of the song, and I can't wait to let everyone see it. While I was dancing to this song, I had already imagined myself performing it LIVE. Maybe it was because I have completed a dance full of masculinity? Or this could also be mysterious feeling. (laugh) This is a work which I'm proud of! I have completed something fantastic.
Q: It has been such a long time since we last seen you. You are full of masculinity indeed. Have your qualities changed too?
A: Have I? I have been like this all along...
Q: No, you aren't like this. (laugh)
A: You must be kidding (laugh)
Q: I was joking. (laugh) You're different from before; you have become even more mature! This feeling was brought up very obviously.
A: To hear something like this, I am very happy! It just means I have grown up.
Q: What's your definition of masculinity?
A: (answers immediately) I think it's being compassionate. The difference between a male and a female is that the male's point of view is focused on compassion. If they aren't capable of this, then they aren't suitable to be called a man. Masculinity is equal to power and strength - that's what most people think; however, I have a different view. The real power of a man lies in his compassion for others. Of course, "care" meaning as to think for others.
Q: No matter if it's towards a male or a female?
A: Yes, regardless of gender. I feel that the most amazing man and the most amazing person is someone who can care for everyone.
Q: When did you start thinking this way?
A: I had these thoughts long ago; however, it was two to three years ago that I had deeply experienced it. Seeing the people around me showing concern for everyone, I would be thinking, "He's a real man!" I think the eyes cannot see the standards of a man's masculinity. Compared to those, what's most important is how the heart treats the people around him.
Q: That can also be called the inner strength.
A: Yes, the inner strength so he could care for the others. If you can't even take care of yourself, then is there any strength left to care for other people?
Q: That's so true! Then how could a person maintain his emotions to preserve his inner strength?
A: It's very simple; when one is sad, or when one is having difficulties in life, you have to keep a positive outlook. If one is happy or encounters something worth smiling about, multiply the happiness two or three times. In another occasion when you are not feeling good, keep it within your heart and try not to let the others feel it… There will definitely be times when you burst "Wu wa~!" to relieve stress. (laugh) It's simple to say, yet actually hard to do. I hope that I can handle my emotions better next time.
Q: Speaking about sad happenings, "Kanashimi no Yukue" is a song about deep frustration. What were you thinking when you sang this song?
A: I feel the melody and lyrics, and sing with my honest emotions. I don't pursue unreasonable strength. For men, the word "strength" is something normal - that's what everyone thought, isn't it? However, I think love is not about strength or weakness; this song has both weakness and the true side of a man. Even though men love to act cool, they also have moments when they are weak? Most of the time, I won't express those feelings. It's only through singing that I could be more honest with myself.
Q: Are you weak?
A: Sometimes. There were also times when I want to express my limitations. That was a part of my heart as "a man." Even though strength and weaknesses are totally different things, they are actually one.
Q: If this was the case, then I felt that there is Junsu's shadow in this single.
A: Yes. That's the reason why it was named "XIAH." It's my stage name, and that's how it became the single's name. From now onwards, every solo project will be leaning more towards my emotions, towards everyone, towards music. I think this is the most important thing. I couldn't lie.
Q: Music could let you be the most honest with yourself?
A: Yes. It should be the only way. (laugh)
Q: After listening to XIAH junsu's music, I felt that I could be closer to Junsu.
A: If you could feel this way after listening to my music, I would be really very happy. From now on, I will be using XIAH junsu to act, to talk, and to also discover things which I don’t know of yet. Singing onstage is when I could be myself the most. If this could be expressed to everyone, it would be the happiest thing for me.
Q: First Musical in Korea
A: The first theatrical performance. It's a totally different way to act and to perform music. The way to express them is a big challenge. I also had the chance to meet a lot of people, and I was extremely happy; I felt such bliss. Do I like acting? ....I still prefer singing. (laugh) However, I will enjoy acting in the future, especially musicals like "Mozart." It's not the same as movies or dramas. It’s performing and acting in music, isn't it? That’s why I was used it quite quickly. (We want to see it in Japan, too!) Really? I feel like crying! Sorry, that seems too exaggerated. (laugh)
