YunHo’s Interview
Soaring towards a brand new stage, revealing Jung YunHo’s most honest side!
At the height of 184cm, having a remarkable figure of long arms and legs, you can see the masculine part of him in the strong stares from his eyes. This part of Jung YunHo has always left a strong impression to everyone. As the leader of Tohoshinki, who has won over the whole of Asia, he is now stepping onto a brand new stage as an actor.
“Because having an experience in acting is a good path of improvement for artists, in the past, many around me had advised me to take up this road. But back then, I didn’t have much interest to act solely as a handsome character…however after thinking thoroughly, I wish to play a part in a character where I can mature from it.”
YunHo’s debut drama ‘No Limit’ is a Korean youth idol drama which tells the story of a love triangle, family relationships, the conflicts between a man’s friendships, and the man who began his life as a talented soccer player and forsaken himself to despair, in the form of Cha Bong Gun.
“The cheerful and optimistic character of Cha Bong Gun who can tell himself, ‘It’s alright, I’m sure I will be able to see the light as long as I continue to work hard’ even when he failed is really similar to my character. However, although the thinking is the same, it’s really different as compared to me with a leader role, as his (Cha Bong Gun) actions are really childish (laughs). But as the drama progresses, please look out for his maturity as a man.”
YunHo expressed that he was able to experience the maturity that was full of emotions together with the quick-tempered youth, Cha Bong Gun. His developments in acting and the exciting scenes of the drama are the main highlights.
“I think that my acting at the beginning and towards the end is totally different. At the beginning, there is the feeling of me trying to act as Cha Bong Gun, but towards the end Cha Bong Gun had lived in my heart. Playing soccer is one of my hobbies; my position is not a striker like Cha Bong Gun, but as a goalkeeper (bitter laughter). Therefore I had to practice dribbling and shooting goals not only before the filming starts, but even during the break time.”
The filming for the Korean drama is known to be a strictly '24 hours no-sleep' process that goes on continuously. Other than the soccer scenes, there are accident scenes and action scenes included in the filming as well. Therefore, it is really exhausting even for someone who is good at workouts like YunHo.
“The most difficult scene would be the one at the Han River, where I have to dive down deep to the bottom of the river bearing my body weight and I always could not match the timing with when the camera is rolling, therefore I fainted after several shoots. There are a lot of things to be taken cared of during filming and besides, the help of substitute actors for the dangerous scenes are also required. But in order to show everyone that I’m doing my best in playing the character Cha Bong Gun, I felt that I should take up the challenge myself. And maybe because of this reason I ended up entering the hospital twice (bitter laughter). The doctor had also advised me to take a good rest and the thought of ‘if it’s Cha Bong Gun, what would he do?’ had me ending up resuming the filming without resting.”
Not satisfied with only the title of popular artiste, YunHo also put in a lot of passion into filming the drama, hoping to touch everyone’s heart and also in creating a close family relationship with the cast and the staff members.
“It’s really great when there is a lot of communication going on, especially during the action scenes, where in order not to be injured while filming, many discussions were carried out. This resulted in partnerships and a strong bond also came naturally because of that, therefore we often meet up for meals. They even came during the first leg of the ‘Michael Jackson Memorial Concert’ to support me.”
If you pay attention to your daily achievements, your dream will be realised.
The TV drama 'No Limit' has given YunHo an irreplaceable experience and encounter. In the first half of the drama, there is a scene where the poor Cha Bong Gun carried his girlfriend in princess-style and had to run around the central streets of Seoul as her birthday present, which is something that will not happen in real life. No matter how poor one’s life is, is it still possible to have that kind of date?
"(Laughs) If I were to be very poor, I would do some planning for the date. As I have many friends, I would get everyone to gather at the Seoul Tower (Seoul's dating hotspot) to sing and dance, to celebrate my girlfriend's birthday in a lively atmosphere. Also, even though a lot of money would be spent, I would still want to rent the cinema for the date, so that only my girlfriend and I will be in the cinema. I would have the pre-recorded well-wishes from all friends and my messages to her to be shown on the screen. And the messages that will be shown on the electronic boards in the arena would be a surprise present.”
“On those special dates, I would be very happy if she comes wearing a home-style floral printed dress. But I am not picky with what she wears…… Whatever my girlfriend wants to wear, as long as the clothes suit her charm, it is the best. I will also dress according to my sentiments on that day. For example, when I feel lonely I will wear western style attire out to drink (bitter laughter). Recently, I have been pairing up T-shirts and shorts, with jackets and sandals quite a lot.”
What kind of impression do you have on Japanese women?
“(They) have a very feminine sense. In particular, when Japanese women speak in Japanese, their tone sounds especially gentle. I like it; as soon as I hear it everything would become well.”
Speaking of the Japanese language, YunHo’s Japanese proficiency is so excellent that it surprises many people. (He) completely does not rely on the translator next to him, and has the basic proficiency to establish a conversation.
“It was through learning from my Japanese teacher, watching Japan’s dramas and movies, and interacting with the staff that has made (my) Japanese improve so much.”
Through singing and dancing, knowing the Japanese language, and also acting, YunHo has mastered a variety of skills and achieved various dreams.
“I feel that there is no need for one to discover a dream gradually and without a purpose. The important thing is to not senselessly go through today or any other day. Every encounter should be treasured. Do not be afraid to fail, if you are have the interest then go on and take the challenge. If there is a continuous achievement everyday, you will be able to discover your own dream for sure. When I was a child, my dream was to become a public prosecutor. Under the influence of my relatives, I envisioned myself of upholding justice. I do not know when I started having the dream of becoming an artiste, but I would work hard just to be able to debut as one. Now, my goal is to show everyone my continuous development as an artiste.”
