The season of K-pop awards ceremonies has returned. Not only are KBS, MBC and SBS preparing their K-pop festivals that will be held in late-December, but there are a number of K-pop awards ceremonies lined up from November.
The hottest potato of this year’s K-pop awards ceremonies is whether or not JYJ (Park Yoochun, Kim Jaejoong, Kim Junsu), a trio made up of members of TVXQ, will appear in them. Because of the group’s ongoing dispute with their former agency SM Entertainment, it seems that K-pop awards ceremonies would rather turn their backs on the group.
There is a possibility that if JYJ appear or win an award at these awards ceremonies, SM Entertainment may refuse to attend at all. There’s the added pressure that these ceremonies may lose the ‘big catch’ of the year as f(x), TVXQ, Super Junior and Girls’ Generation all made comebacks in 2011.
But it is impossible to completely rule JYJ out of the competition. JYJ are qualified enough to be invited to these awards ceremonies as their first Korean album ‘In Heaven’ has sold over 300,000 copies. And JYJ’s fandom is not one that can be ignored. JYJ’s fans are currently taking action against recent events that include JYJ’s inability to appear on KBS’ ‘Music Bank’. If JYJ are unable to attend the end of the year awards ceremonies, questions could be raised on their unjust nature.
JYJ’s side has stated, “JYJ are not in a situation where they are unable to appear in these awards ceremonies due to overseas activities after mid-November. If the organizers of these ceremonies invite JYJ, they are willing to attend.“
Beginning with the Melon Music Awards on the 24th of November, Mnet’s MAMA (Mnet Asian Music Festival’ will be held at the Indoor Stadium in Singapore on the 29th of November, followed by the Golden Disk Awards in early December, the Goan Charts Awards in mid-December and the Seoul K-pop Awards early next year.
